Sacred Valley Tour with Moray & Salt Mines – 1 Day

Sacred Valley Tour with Moray & Salt Mines – 1 Day

See the heart of the Inca Empire in one perfect day, from Pisac to Ollantaytambo.

The Sacred Valley is not a day trip from Cusco. It is where the Incas lived, farmed, and built. Cusco sits at 3,400m and is cold and dry. The valley sits 600m lower, with a river, rich soil, and sun. The Incas grew their corn here, stored it in Pisac, experimented with crops at Moray, mined salt at Maras, and made their last stand at Ollantaytambo.

This is a full-day loop, no backtracking. We start at 7:30am at your hotel, drop 600m into the valley, and work our way across it: weaving village, Pisac ruins, Urubamba for lunch, Moray, Maras salt pans, and Ollantaytambo for sunset. You are back in Cusco by 6:30pm, or you can stay in Ollantaytambo to catch the train to Machu Picchu the next morning.

From $45 USD per person. Small-group van, licensed guide, hotel pickup and drop-off included. Entrance fees and lunch are paid in cash on the day.

pisac ruins - Orange Nation Peru

  • Duration: Full day, 7:30am to 6:30pm.
  • Start and End: Cusco hotel pickup / drop-off (or finish in Ollantaytambo).
  • Max Altitude: 3,754m at Chinchero viewpoint, most of day at 2,800–3,000m.
  • Group Size: Small group, max 12, average 5.
  • Difficulty: Easy, short walks on uneven stone at each site.

Highlights for the Sacred Valley Tour

  • Traditional Weaving Center & Camelid Farm
Start outside Cusco at a working farm with llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas. Feed them, take photos, then watch local women weave by hand. See how they dye wool with roots and plants, not chemicals. Vicuña wool is the finest in the world, legal pieces come with a government certificate.
  • Mirador de Taray
Your first view of the valley. From here you see the entire Sacred Valley laid out: the Urubamba River, checkerboard fields, and Pisac ruins on the ridge. This is why the Incas called it sacred.
  • Pisac – The Gateway and the Largest Inca Cemetery
Pisac sits on a mountain spur overlooking the valley. Explore the agricultural terraces, the Intihuatana sun temple, and the food storehouses built where the air is cold. Walk the trail above 2,000 tombs carved into the cliff fac, the biggest Inca cemetery ever found.
  • Urubamba – Buffet Lunch Stop
We break in Urubamba for a proper buffet. Vegan, vegetarian, and meat options, plus local coffee and desserts. Lunch is not included so you choose what you want to pay for.
  • Moray – The Inca Agricultural Laboratory
Three massive circular terraces carved into the earth, each level a different microclimate, up to 15°C difference from top to bottom. The Incas brought soil from the coast, jungle, and highlands here to test crops. It was built before the Incas, perfected by them, and used by locals until the 1970s.
  • Maras Salt Mines – A Living Pre-Inca Tradition
Over 3,000 salt pans cascade down the hillside, fed by a natural salty spring. Families have owned individual pans for generations. They still harvest by hand, letting the water evaporate in the sun. This is one of the last places on earth using this method, and the cooperative supplies salt across Peru.
  • Ollantaytambo – The Last Stand
The best-preserved Inca town in Peru, still lived in today. Climb the massive terraces to the Temple of the Sun, built with pink granite brought from 6km away. This is where Manco Inca defeated the Spanish in 1537 before retreating to Vilcabamba. Watch the sunset light up the valley, it is the perfect end to the day.
  • Perfect for Acclimatization
You sleep in Cusco, but you spend the day 400–600m lower in the valley. Walking at this altitude helps your body adjust without the strain of Rainbow Mountain or Humantay on day one.
  • Local Guides, No Rushing
Your guide is Cusco-born, Ministry of Culture licensed, and does this route 4–5 times a week. Small group means time for photos, questions, and a coffee in Ollantaytambo before the drive back. No big-bus stops, no forced shopping.
  • All Logistics Handled
Private modern van with driver waits at each site. We handle tickets, timing, and the mountain roads. You walk the ruins, we handle the rest.

Our Approach

Built for Acclimatization, Not Just Checkboxes

Sacred Valley Tour with Moray & Salt Mines – Orange Nation Peru

Some agencies sell the Sacred Valley as a rushed bus loop: 5 stops, 30 people, back to Cusco by 4pm. We built it as a proper full-day journey. You start at a weaving farm before the crowds, hit Pisac early for the views, have a real lunch break in Urubamba, then do Moray and Maras in the afternoon light, and finish at Ollantaytambo for sunset when the day-trippers have left.

We designed this for 2026 crowds and altitude. You spend the day 400–600m lower than Cusco, which is exactly what your body needs on day 1 or 2. You get Pisac, Moray, Maras, and Ollantaytambo in one logical loop with no backtracking.

No High Passes, All the Culture

ollantaytambo sacred valley cusco - Orange Nation Peru

The Sacred Valley sits between 2,400m and 3,400m. You get Inca terraces, living salt mines, and an intact Inca town without the altitude suffering. Your day is short walks on stone paths, not a trek. Your van waits at each site.

Small Groups, Real Guides

We run a maximum of 12 travelers, not 40. Average is 5. Your guide is a licensed Sacred Valley specialist from Cusco who does this route 4–5 times a week. Small groups mean time at the weaving center for questions, time at Pisac for photos without being rushed, and time in Ollantaytambo to actually learn the history before sunset.

At A Glance

  • How the Day Flows
No rushed timetable. 7:30am pickup at your Cusco hotel, drive to Taray viewpoint, weaving center and camelids, Pisac ruins (45 min walk), drive through Coya and Calca, Urubamba buffet lunch (not included, 1 hour), Moray terraces, Maras salt mines downhill walk, Ollantaytambo fortress for sunset, drive back to Cusco around 6:30pm. We adjust pace for your group. You can finish in Ollantaytambo at no extra cost to catch your Machu Picchu train.
  • What to Wear
Comfortable walking shoes with grip for Inca stone (not sandals). Layers for 10°C morning in Cusco to 24°C afternoon in the valley. Sun hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+. Light rain jacket year-round. Small daypack for water, passport, cash for tickets, and camera.
  • Not Big on Hiking?
This is not a trek. Each site is 20–40 minutes of easy walking on uneven stone with plenty of stops. The van drives between sites. You see four major Inca sites without ever hiking uphill for more than 15 minutes.
  • Can We Upgrade?
Private tour $85 per person (min 2) for your own guide and van with flexible timing. Add Chinchero textile village and ruins $15 pp. Upgrade lunch to a farm-to-table restaurant in Lamay. Finish in Ollantaytambo and we store your big bag in Cusco for free.

The only full-day loop that hits Pisac in the morning, Maras and Moray in afternoon light, and Ollantaytambo at sunset.

  • Tour Time: ∼11 hours.
  • Altitude: 3,400m Cusco / 3,754m max at Taray / 2,792m at Ollantaytambo.
  • Distance: 150 km driving, 3–4 km total walking.
  • Difficulty: Easy.
  • Meals: Breakfast on your own, lunch not included (buffet in Urubamba).
  • Accommodation: None, return to Cusco same day or finish in Ollantaytambo.

Your guide picks you up at 7:30am from your Cusco hotel. Have breakfast first, we won’t stop to eat until Urubamba around 1pm. We head northeast and drop 600m into the Sacred Valley.

Weaving Center & Camelid Farm
First stop is 45 minutes outside Cusco at a family-run center. You meet llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas up close, you can feed and photograph them. Inside, local weavers show you how they spin wool and dye it by hand using cochineal, indigo, and local roots. No chemicals. At the end there is a small shop with certified alpaca and vicuña textiles. We spend about 30 minutes here.

Mirador de Taray
Ten minutes further is the Taray viewpoint. From here you see the full Sacred Valley: the Urubamba River below, patchwork fields, and Pisac ruins on the ridge ahead. Your guide points out the layout and explains why the Incas chose this valley. We stop 10 minutes for photos.

Pisac Archaeological Site
We drive to the top entrance of Pisac, the gateway to the valley. This is a hillside city, not just terraces. Your guide walks you through the Intihuatana sun temple, the ceremonial baths, and the colcas (storehouses) built high where the cold air preserved corn and potatoes. Above you on the cliff are more than 2,000 tombs, the largest Inca cemetery in Peru. The views over the valley are the best of the day. We spend about 1 hour here, mostly downhill walking on stone paths.

Urubamba – Lunch
We drive through the towns of Coya and Lamay to Urubamba, the heart of the valley. We stop at a large buffet restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Vegan, vegetarian, and meat options, plus soups, salads, mains, desserts, coffee, and coca tea. Lunch is not included so you pay for what you choose (45–60 soles). We stop about 1 hour.

Maras Salt Mines
After lunch we climb to the colonial town of Maras, then walk 15 minutes downhill to the Salineras. More than 3,000 bright white salt pans step down the mountain, fed by a natural salty spring. Local families have owned the same pans for generations and still harvest by hand, flood the pan, let the sun evaporate the water, collect the salt. It is one of the last working pre-Inca mines in the world. Your guide explains the cooperative system. We spend about 45 minutes here.

Moray
Ten minutes by van to Moray. Three huge circular terraces drop into the earth like an amphitheater. Each level is a different temperature, up to 15°C difference from top to bottom. The Incas used it as an agricultural laboratory, bringing soil from the coast, jungle, and highlands to test crops. It was built before the Incas and perfected by them. We walk to the bottom circle and back up. We spend about 45 minutes here.

Ollantaytambo
Our last stop is Ollantaytambo, 30 minutes down the valley. This is the best-preserved Inca town still lived in today. We climb the steep terraces to the Temple of the Sun, built with massive pink granite stones dragged from 6 km away. This is where Manco Inca defeated the Spanish in 1537, the Incas’ last great victory. Your guide shows you the unfinished stones, the water fountains, and the storehouses on the hill opposite. We time it for sunset light on the valley. We spend about 1 hour 15 minutes here.

We leave Ollantaytambo at 5:30pm. If you are continuing to Machu Picchu, we drop you at your hotel in town at no extra cost. If returning to Cusco, we drive 1 hour 45 minutes via Chinchero and drop you at your hotel around 6:30–7:00pm.

Top 10 FAQs for the Sacred Valley Tour 1 Day

Do I need to buy entrance tickets in advance?

No. You pay in cash on the day. Bring Peruvian soles. The Boleto Turistico Parcial is 70 soles and covers Pisac, Ollantaytambo, and Moray. Maras Salt Mines is separate at 20 soles. We stop at the ticket office first. No cards accepted anywhere in the valley.

Is this tour good for acclimatization?

Yes, it is designed for it. You sleep in Cusco at 3,400m but spend most of the day at 2,700–3,000m in the valley. Walking at lower altitude helps your body adjust. It is the perfect first full day before you do Rainbow Mountain or Humantay.

How much walking is involved?

About 3–4 km total, split across four sites. Pisac is 45 minutes downhill on stone paths. Maras is a 15-minute downhill walk. Moray is a walk to the bottom of the circles and back up. Ollantaytambo is a climb up steep terraces — you go at your own pace. No long hikes.

Is lunch included in the price?

No. We stop for one hour at a buffet restaurant in Urubamba. It costs 45–60 soles and has vegan, vegetarian, and meat options. You pay for what you eat. This lets you choose, and keeps the tour price low for everyone.

Can I finish the tour in Ollantaytambo instead of returning to Cusco?

Yes, and it is free. We arrive in Ollantaytambo around 5:30pm for sunset. Most travelers stay there for their Machu Picchu train the next morning. Just tell your guide at pickup. Your main luggage can stay at your Cusco hotel.

What is the difference between your tour and the big bus tours?

Big buses take 30–40 people, stop for 2-hour shopping demonstrations, and backtrack to Cusco three times. We take max 12 people, run one clean loop west, and finish at Ollantaytambo. You get a Cusco-born guide, no forced shopping, and you are at each site when the light is best.

Do you visit the Pisac market?

Not on the standard itinerary. We visit the Pisac archaeological ruins in the morning, which are above the town. The artisan market is open daily in the plaza. On request, we can add a 30-minute market stop on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays when it is biggest.

Can children, seniors, or people with limited mobility do this tour?

Yes. There is no minimum age and we have hosted travelers into their 70s. The van drives to each site entrance. You can skip the climb at Ollantaytambo and wait in the plaza. We recommend a baby carrier instead of a stroller for the Inca steps.

What time is pickup and what should I bring?

Pickup is 7:30am from your Cusco hotel. Have breakfast first. Bring your original passport, 150 soles cash for tickets and lunch, 1.5L water, sun hat, sunscreen, layers for cold morning and warm afternoon, and closed shoes with grip. We carry emergency oxygen.

Why do you visit Moray and Maras in the afternoon?

Because the light is better and the crowds are gone. Morning tours hit Maras at 10am with 20 buses. We do Pisac first, have lunch, then arrive at Maras around 2:30pm and Moray at 3:30pm. You get photos without people in them, and you finish at Ollantaytambo for golden-hour sunset.

  • Salineras de Maras – The 3,000 Salt Pools
More than 3,000 small pools cascade down the hillside like steps. A hot spring feeds salt water into the pools. Families fill them by hand and harvest the salt after evaporation using tools unchanged for centuries. Entrance is 20 soles, cash only.
  • Moray – The Greenhouses of the Incas
Explore circular terraces carved into a basin. Each level has its own microclimate. The Incas used it to test crops at high altitude. Pre-Inca peoples started it. The Incas improved it. Requires Boleto Turistico.
  • Andean Scenery
The route links three valleys with views of snow peaks and villages. Your driver stops for photos when the light is best.
  • Local Expert Guides
Your guide is Cusco born, licensed, and fluent in English. Private service gives you time for questions and photos.
  • Perfect Acclimatization Day
Light walking at altitude with no steep climbs. Take it on arrival day or before your trek.
  • All Logistics Handled
Private van waits at each site. Your guide helps you buy the Boleto Turistico at the first stop, 70 soles for one day or 130 soles for ten days, soles only.

Our Approach

Designed for Culture, Not Crowds

Some agencies run the Sacred Valley in a 40 person bus with three stops in eight hours. We do it private and half day. You and your guide leave Cusco at 8:00 am or 1:00 pm, reach Chinchero before the big groups, and see the weaving demonstration without a crowd. You get time for photos at Moray and you can watch the salt harvest at Salineras without being rushed.

We built this as the perfect acclimatization day. You are at 3,400 to 3,762 meters, so we keep walking short and drive between sites. You see Chinchero, Maras, Salineras, and Moray in four hours without exhaustion. By the time you finish you understand the valley and you are ready for a longer trek the next day.

Guides Who Are Actually From Cusco

We do not use freelance students from Lima. Our guides were born in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, studied tourism at San Antonio Abad University, and are licensed by the Ministry of Culture. They grew up speaking Quechua at home. Groups are private only, so you get conversation, not a memorized script. They know the weavers in Chinchero by name, the best light at Moray, and which salt pools are being harvested that day.

No Wasted Time

Our driver waits at each site with the van. No parking hunts, no walking back to a bus lot. We go in order to avoid backtracking: Cusco to Chinchero, down to Maras village, to Salineras, then to Moray, then straight back to Cusco. You finish at your hotel in time for lunch or dinner. It is efficient and comfortable.

Cusco City Tour Half Day

Cusco City Tour – Half Day

Walk the capital of the Inca Empire, where 500 years of history live on every corner.

Cusco is not a museum you visit. It is a museum you walk through. The city was the navel of the Inca world, laid out in the shape of a puma with Sacsayhuaman as its head. The Spanish built cathedrals on top of Inca palaces, melted the gold, and kept the stonework. Today you see both worlds at once: Qoricancha’s perfect mortarless walls under the Santo Domingo convent, 100 ton boulders at Sacsayhuaman fitted so tight a knife will not fit between them, and fountains at Tambomachay that still flow as they did for Inca royalty.

This is a private half day tour, available at 9:00am or 1:00pm. No buses and no rushing. Your Cusco born guide meets you at your hotel and walks you through the layers of history: pre Inca, Inca, colonial, and modern. In four hours you cover the five essential sites in and above Cusco with no backtracking and no time wasted in lines.

From $45 USD per person when booked for two or more. Private van, licensed guide, and all logistics included. Entrance fees are paid in cash on the day.

  • Duration: Half day, 9:00am to 1:00pm or 1:00pm to 5:00pm
  • Start and End: Cusco hotel pick up and drop off
  • Max Altitude: 3,700m at Sacsayhuaman, most of tour at 3,400m
  • Group Size: Private only, you and your party
  • Difficulty: Easy, short walks with some stone steps and hills

Highlights for the Cusco City Tour

  • Qoricancha – The Temple of Gold
Enter the most sacred Inca temple, once covered floor to ceiling in solid gold sheets. The Spanish melted the gold and built Santo Domingo convent on top, but the Inca foundation remains intact. See the curved wall of the Sun Temple, Inca astronomy niches, and Cusco School paintings in one site.
  • Sacsayhuaman – The 100 Ton Puzzle
Walk the zigzag walls of the fortress that overlooks Cusco. The largest stone weighs 128 tons and was moved here from 20km away. The Incas designed Cusco as a puma, and this is the head. The site is still used today for Inti Raymi on June 24.
  • Q’enqo – The Inca Maze
Explore hand carved bedrock with altars, zigzag channels for chicha offerings, and underground caves. Look for the condor, llama, and snake carvings. Archaeologists found mummies in the chambers below. The name means maze in Quechua and the layout shows why.
  • Puka Pukara – The Red Fort
A small hilltop outpost built with red stone. It was likely a checkpoint or lodge for Inca nobility rather than a fortress. The site offers excellent views over the valley and stood on the Inca road to the jungle.
  • Tambomachay – The Inca Baths
Known as the place of rest. This was Inca Yupanqui’s hunting lodge and water temple. Aqueducts, canals, and fountains carved from stone still carry spring water after 500 years. The Incas worshipped water here and the engineering makes it clear why.
  • Local Expert Guides
Your guide was born in Cusco, studied tourism at San Antonio Abad University, and is licensed by the Ministry of Culture. Private service means time for questions, photos, and stories you will not get on large bus tours.
  • Perfect First Day or Last Day
Take it the morning you arrive to acclimatize with light walking at altitude. Or take it your last afternoon before flying out. Four hours, back for dinner, and you will understand the stones you have been walking past.
  • All Logistics Handled
A private van waits at each site. No parking issues, no taxis, and no getting lost between Sacsayhuaman and Q’enqo. You walk and learn while we manage the details.
  • Great Value Add On
From $45 per person for two or more. Entrance fees: Boleto Turistico 70 soles for one day or 130 soles for ten days, plus Qoricancha 20 soles. Paid locally in cash.

Our Approach

Designed for History, Not Crowds

Some agencies run Cusco on a big bus with 40 people. We do it private. You and your guide walk Qoricancha, then drive up to Sacsayhuaman before the tour buses arrive. You get the stones to yourself, time for photos, and real stories instead of a loudspeaker script.

We built this as the perfect first day in Cusco. You are at 3,400 meters, so we keep walking short and driving between the four hilltop sites. You see Qoricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Q’enqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay in four hours without getting exhausted. By the time you finish, you understand the city layout and you are better acclimatized for the Sacred Valley the next day.

Guides Who Are Actually From Cusco

We do not use freelance students from Lima. Our guides were born in Cusco, studied tourism at San Antonio Abad University, and are licensed by the Ministry of Culture. They grew up playing in these ruins. Groups are private only, so you get conversation, not a memorized tour. They know the best photo angles at Sacsayhuaman, the quiet cave at Q’enqo, and where the sun hits Qoricancha’s curved wall.

No Wasted Time

Our driver waits at each site with the van. No parking hunts, no walking back down the hill to find a bus. We go Qoricancha first, then drive the loop above the city in order: Sacsayhuaman to Q’enqo to Puka Pukara to Tambomachay. You finish and we drop you at your hotel or Plaza de Armas. It is efficient and comfortable.

The guys were very efficient throughout the trip and attentive when we arrived at the campsite. The kitchen service was super delicious , the food quality and healthy, dishes suitable for people (vegans) and a buffet that has nothing to envy others.
Their kindness and efficiency are greatly appreciated for this journey to the Inca Way.

We had a great experience doing the 4d3n Inca Trail. Our porters were so hard working and made sure our tents and equipment were always ready for us. The chef Mario was outstanding and prepared restaurant quality vegetarian food everyday. Our guide Carlos made the trip exceptional, always making sure we were informed and making sure we were all enjoying the trail. He went above and beyond to encourage me when I was unwell. He made the trip the best ever. A beautiful and wonderful trek.

Hiking the Short Inca Trail was hands-down one of the highlights of my entire trip to Peru. This trek is the perfect option if you want a taste of the iconic Inca Trail without committing to the full 4-day hike.

From the moment we started the hike at KM 104 Carlos our guide was amazing and patient. we were surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, lush cloud forests, and fascinating Inca ruins. The trail itself is moderately challenging—expect a steady incline, stone steps, and a bit of cardio—but it’s absolutely doable for anyone with a decent fitness level. The sense of accomplishment when you reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu is
