Our Approach
Engineered for the Classic Arrival
1-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Circuit 2

We designed this day for travelers who want the Inca Trail experience without camping. You start at KM 104, not in a bus line. You hike the original stone path through cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna, eat a chef lunch overlooking the ruins, then reach the Sun Gate in the early afternoon when the morning crowds have left. You enter Machu Picchu on foot, the way the Inca intended, then tour the full Circuit 2 for the classic postcard view.
Most agencies sell this as a rushed hike with Circuit 3 or 4. We do not. We secure the limited 1-Day Inca Trail permits and the Circuit 2 ticket for 2026, so you get the upper terraces, Temple of the Sun, Sacred Plaza and Intihuatana in one visit. No backtracking to Aguas Calientes for a second day.
Dedicated to You, Hotel to Hotel

Book direct and we handle the logistics that stop most travelers. 4:00 am pick-up from your Cusco hotel, private van to Ollantaytambo, 6:10 am Expedition train to KM 104. Your guide carries your permits, meets you at the trail checkpoint, and leads a maximum of eight hikers. You walk 12 kilometers with only a daypack. We include the train back, the bus down from Machu Picchu, and the private van return to Cusco around 10 pm.
Our guides are Cusco locals with degrees in archaeology or tourism, fluent in English, and wilderness first aid certified. They set a steady pace for altitude, not a race.
Our People

Orange Nation is family owned in Cusco. Our founder started as a porter on the Inca Trail, so we pay fair wages, provide full health insurance, and limit loads. We hire guides from the Sacred Valley communities you hike through. Your permit fees directly support trail maintenance and the Machu Picchu sanctuary.
Things To Know Before You Go
- Altitude is manageable, fitness matters
The trail starts at 2,000m at KM 104 and climbs to 2,730m at the Sun Gate. It is not the altitude that is hard, it is the steps. You will hike six to seven hours with sustained uphill sections, including the stone stairs known locally as the Gringo Killer. Train with hills and stairs for three to four weeks before. - Weather changes by the hour
You pass through three microclimates. The river start is warm and humid, Wiñay Wayna is cloud forest with possible rain, the Sun Gate is windy and cooler. Bring layers, a rain jacket, sun hat and sunscreen every month of the year. - Timing is everything
We reach Inti Punku around 2 pm. That means soft light for photos and space on the terraces. Your Circuit 2 tour starts right after, about two hours, then you have free time before the bus down. You cannot climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain on this itinerary due to park time limits. - Small group means small group
We cap at eight travelers. You get a dedicated guide all day, not a rotating contractor. No forced shopping stops in Aguas Calientes.

Circuits and Safety
The 1 Day Inca Trail is a point-to-point cloud forest hike, not a high-altitude camping expedition. We designed it around the final 12 km of original Inca pavement, one major archaeological site, and same day return that prioritizes efficiency over tents.
By starting at KM 104 and timing your arrival at Inti Punku for 2:00 pm, you avoid the morning day trip crowds inside Machu Picchu. You reach 2,720 m at the Sun Gate but only for 20 minutes, then descend to 2,430 m for your tour. That pacing is why this trek works for active travelers with 1 night in Cusco. For 2026, your Machu Picchu ticket includes Circuit 2, the Classic Route, completed in a single guided visit.
Route Structure
Day 1 KM 104 to Machu Picchu via Sun Gate, Same Day Return
We start at 4:00 am from Cusco and drive to Ollantaytambo for the 6:10 am train to KM 104 at 2,000 m. After passport control you hike 12 km on original stone to Chachabamba, then climb to Wiñay Wayna at 2,650 m for a guided visit and lunch. Continue to Inti Punku at 2,720 m, arriving around 2:00 pm. Descend to Machu Picchu for Circuit 2, the Classic Route covering upper terraces and Guardhouse viewpoint, plus Temple of the Sun, Sacred Plaza, Intihuatana, Temple of the Three Windows, Temple of the Condor, and Royal Sector for 2 hours. Exit and take the bus to Aguas Calientes. Board the 6:20 pm Expedition train to Ollantaytambo, then private van to Cusco. You carry only a daypack. No overnight bag.
Safety Management
- Altitude First
Maximum altitude is 2,720 m at Inti Punku for 20 minutes only. You descend to 2,430 m for your tour and return to Cusco at 3,400 m the same night. We recommend 1 to 2 nights in Cusco before the trek for comfort on the steps. Guides monitor symptoms and carry pulse oximeters. - Trail Safety
The 1 Day Inca Trail is original Inca stonework, often wet, steep and uneven, especially the Gringo Killer steps before the Sun Gate and the descent to Machu Picchu. We set a slow, steady pace. Trekking poles with rubber tips are provided and highly recommended. Guides carry first aid kits and emergency oxygen on all departures. - No Camping Exposure
This is a hotel to hotel day trek. No overnight means no exposure to cold nights or high camps. Strict leave no trace protocol on trail, no campfires. - Real Guides
Certified English speaking guides from Cusco who specialize in the KM 104 route. Maximum 8 travelers per guide. Guides are trained in wilderness first aid and return season after season on this route.
Weather and Terrain
The route moves through two climate zones in one day. Mornings at KM 104 can be 10°C with mist, afternoons in cloud forest are 25°C and humid with rain possible year round. We check conditions at the 6:00 pm briefing and adjust start times if needed. The advantage of same day return is you are back in Cusco before night rain or temperature drops.
What We Provide for Safety
- WFR certified guideswith radio communication.
- First aid kit and emergency oxygen bottleon all departures.
- Pre trek briefingat our office the night before.
- Chef prepared box lunchDay 1 with dietary options.

How to Arrive Ready

- Bring layersfor cool mornings and hot humid afternoons, plus broken in boots for stone steps.
- Pack a headlampfor 4:00 am hotel departure and rain jacket for cloud forest.
- Tell your guide immediatelyif you feel headache, nausea, or dizziness. We control pace and can descend quickly to Aguas Calientes.
- Use trekking poleson the steep descent from Inti Punku to protect knees.

This is why we run the 1 Day Inca Trail as a small group expedition with strategic timing. You get the 12 km historic approach, 2:00 pm arrival at Inti Punku, and the full Machu Picchu Circuit 2 in 2026, with professional support managing the stone trail, weather, and logistics.
Top 10 One-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu FAQs
What is the main difference between the 1-Day Inca Trail and just taking the train to Machu Picchu?
The train drops you in Aguas Calientes and you bus up. The 1-Day Trail starts at KM 104 at 2,000m. You hike 12 kilometers on original Inca pavement through Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna, then enter Machu Picchu on foot through the Sun Gate. You arrive in the afternoon with the classic view, then tour Circuit 2 for the postcard photo. It is the only day hike that gives you both the trail and the full citadel.
Do I need a permit and how far ahead should I book?
Yes. The government limits the 1-Day Inca Trail to 250 people per day, plus guides and porters. You need your passport details to secure it. Book three to four months ahead for May to September, two months for shoulder season. We also secure your Machu Picchu Circuit 2 ticket at the same time. Unlike the 4-day trail, it does not sell out six months out, but weekends go first.
How hard is the hike really?
Moderate to difficult. It is not about altitude, the highest point is the Sun Gate at 2,730m, lower than Cusco. It is about steps and duration. You hike six to seven hours with a steady climb to Wiñay Wayna, then the stone stairs locals call the Gringo Killer before Inti Punku. If you can walk ten kilometers in a day with hills and carry a daypack, you can do it. Train with stairs for three weeks before.
Will I get altitude sickness?
Unlikely on this route because you start low in the Sacred Valley. Most people feel better than in Cusco. The challenge is heat and humidity in the cloud forest, not soroche. Still spend one full night in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before, hydrate, and avoid alcohol the night before the 4 am start.
What time do we actually reach Machu Picchu?
We reach the Sun Gate around 2 pm, after the morning tour groups have left. You get photos from the Guardian’s House platforms with soft light. Your guided Circuit 2 tour starts about 2:30 pm and lasts two hours. You finish around 4:30 pm, take the bus down at 5 pm, and catch the 6:20 pm Expedition train back to Ollantaytambo. You are back in Cusco near 10 pm.
What is Circuit 2 and why does it matter for 2026?
Circuit 2 is the classic upper route. It includes the main terraces for the iconic photo, plus the Temple of the Sun, Sacred Plaza, Intihuatana stone and the Royal Sector. Circuits 3 and 4 stay low and miss the postcard view. We guarantee Circuit 2 with your 1-Day permit, most budget operators cannot.
Can I do Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain on the same day?
No. Park rules and timing make it impossible. You arrive at Machu Picchu in the afternoon, and those extra climbs require a morning entry ticket. If you want Huayna Picchu, book the 2-Day Inca Trail and stay overnight in Aguas Calientes.
What is included for food?
We provide a gourmet box lunch you eat at Wiñay Wayna overlooking the ruins. It includes protein, fruit and snacks, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options if you tell us at booking. Breakfast in Cusco and dinner in Aguas Calientes are not included. Bring energy bars and at least 1.5 liters of water. We refill bottles at lunch.
What happens if it rains?
You hike. The trail is in cloud forest and rain is possible year round, especially November to March. We give you a poncho, but bring your own waterproof jacket with a hood. The stone can be slippery, so shoes with good grip are essential. Rain often means fewer people and better photos at the Sun Gate.
Is this better than the 2-Day option?
It depends on pace. The 1-Day is one very long day, about 18 hours door to door. The 2-Day splits the same hike, you sleep in Aguas Calientes, and you tour Machu Picchu fresh the next morning. Choose 1-Day if you are fit, short on time, and want to be back in Cusco that night. Choose 2-Day if you want a relaxed pace or worry about the early start.
Orange Nation Practical FAQs
Where do you pick up?
Hotel pick-up in Cusco at 4:00 am, or in Ollantaytambo at 5:30 am if you are already in the Sacred Valley. We confirm by WhatsApp the night before at the 6 pm briefing.
Can I store my main luggage?
Yes. Leave your big bag free at our Cusco office or at your hotel. Bring only a 20 to 25 liter daypack for the trail. Machu Picchu limits bags to that size.
How big are the groups?
Maximum eight travelers per guide. Average group is four to six. Private service is available for two or more.
What should I pack?
Original passport, rain jacket, sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, 1.5 to 2 liters water, snacks, camera, and layers for warm and cool weather. Hiking boots with ankle support are strongly recommended, not trainers.
Do you provide trekking poles?
We rent Black Diamond poles for $10 USD for the day. Reserve at booking. They help a lot on the stone stairs down from the Sun Gate.
What train do we take?
Outbound is Expedition train Ollantaytambo to KM 104, departs 6:10 am. Return is Expedition Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, departs 6:20 pm. Vistadome upgrade with panoramic windows is $67 USD per person for the return only.
What if I cannot finish the hike?
There is no road out from the trail. Our guide carries a first aid kit and emergency oxygen. In a real emergency, park rangers evacuate by stretcher to KM 104. Travel insurance that covers hiking up to 3,000m is required.
How much should I tip the guide?
Tipping is customary. For a full-day trek, the average is $15 to $20 USD per person for the guide, given at the end in Aguas Calientes. Not mandatory, but appreciated.
