5-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Expedition

Discover the 2026 Insider’s Choice on our 5-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This carefully planned trek is designed for a quieter approach to the Classic Inca Trail, with improved pacing, private high-altitude campsites, and exclusive access to both Circuit 1 and Circuit 3 at Machu Picchu.

Why Choose Orange Nation?

Orange Nation Peru is a 100% locally-owned specialist in the 5-day Inca Trail. Because we are a family-run company with no outside shareholders, we focus on the details that matter: better food, better equipment, and a pace that lets you actually enjoy the journey.

The 5-Day Advantage

  • Beat the Crowds Our 5-day itinerary is designed to put you “out of sync” with the 4-day masses. You’ll enjoy quieter trails and private campsites that others simply don’t see.
  • The Slow Trek Experts We don’t believe in rushing through history. Our small groups (average 4–6 hikers) spend more time exploring ruins like Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna when they are at their most peaceful.
  • Superior Support A longer trek requires better fuel. Our professional chefs specialize in high-energy, gourmet Andean cuisine, and our porters—who we treat like family with fair wages and full insurance—are the best in the business.

Trust the Locals

We aren’t just an agency; we are part of the Cusco community. Our 5-star TripAdvisor reputation and Certificate of Excellence are built on honesty, safety, and a deep respect for our heritage. When you trek with Orange Nation, you’re supporting a sustainable mission to protect the trail for the next generation.

Expert Verdict

The 5-day itinerary is the more controlled and comfortable version of the Classic Inca Trail, designed to improve acclimatization and reduce crowd pressure at key archaeological sites.

The key advantage is timing:
You gain access to Phuyupatamarca’s high-altitude campsite and arrive at Machu Picchu later in the day, when the main wave of trekkers has already passed through the Sun Gate. This creates a quieter and more reflective first view of the citadel, followed by a full guided exploration of both upper and lower sectors.

Who it’s perfect for

  • Photography travelers
Looking for softer light conditions and fewer people at the Sun Gate and Wiñay Wayna.
  • Active families
Wanting a safer, more gradual ascent with better acclimatization support.
  • Slow travel hikers
Who prefer time to explore archaeological sites without rushing.
  • Experienced trekkers wanting comfort
Who want the full Inca Trail experience with improved pacing and recovery time.

Other expeditions to consider

  • 4-Day Classic Inca Trail
For experienced trekkers wanting a faster, more physically demanding ascent with full camping immersion.
  • 2-Day Short Inca Trail
For travellers wanting the Sun Gate experience without multi-day trekking.
  • Salkantay Trek 5 Days
For those prioritising glacier landscapes and remote high-Andean wilderness over the traditional Inca route.

Full Itinerary

A Relaxed Entry to the Trail

Your 5-day journey begins with a 7:00 AM pickup from your Cusco hotel. We travel through the Sacred Valley, passing Chinchero and Urubamba. Unlike shorter itineraries, this later start allows for a more relaxed morning before reaching KM 82 (Piskacucho), where we meet the trekking team and complete the official checkpoint.

Patallacta Exploration

The hike follows the Vilcanota River on mostly flat terrain, serving as a gentle warm-up. After approximately 3 hours, we reach the Inca site of Llactapata (Patallacta). With the extended 5-day pacing, we explore the terraces and residential areas properly before camping nearby in a highly scenic riverside setting.

The Ascent to Llulluchapampa

After lunch, we begin a steady 3-hour ascent into higher terrain, passing Polylepis (Q’ueuña) forest. We continue beyond the lower camps and reach Llulluchapampa (3,800m), a high-altitude campsite that improves positioning for the ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass the following day.

Runkuraqay and the Town Above the Clouds

In the afternoon, we climb again toward Runkuraqay Pass (3,977m), visiting the circular ruins of Runkuraqay along the way. We descend through steep original Inca staircases known as the “Gringo Killer,” moving through high jungle terrain with increasingly open valley views. Along the way, we pass the expansive agricultural terraces of Intipata, an impressive system of stone platforms built into the mountainside.

We continue through cloud forest until reaching Wiñay Wayna for lunch and a final gathering with the trekking team before the final approach to Machu Picchu.

Entering through the Sun Gate

A final steady ascent leads to Inti Punku. Arriving in the late afternoon offers a quieter arrival window after peak visitor flow, with your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu appearing from above.
From here, we descend to the upper terraces and the Guard House viewpoint for photos and orientation before continuing down to Aguas Calientes for the night.

The guys were very efficient throughout the trip and attentive when we arrived at the campsite. The kitchen service was super delicious , the food quality and healthy, dishes suitable for people (vegans) and a buffet that has nothing to envy others.
Their kindness and efficiency are greatly appreciated for this journey to the Inca Way.

We had a great experience doing the 4d3n Inca Trail. Our porters were so hard working and made sure our tents and equipment were always ready for us. The chef Mario was outstanding and prepared restaurant quality vegetarian food everyday. Our guide Carlos made the trip exceptional, always making sure we were informed and making sure we were all enjoying the trail. He went above and beyond to encourage me when I was unwell. He made the trip the best ever. A beautiful and wonderful trek.

The trail itself is moderately challenging—expect a steady incline, stone steps, and a bit of cardio—but it’s absolutely doable for anyone with a decent fitness level. The sense of accomplishment when you reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu is
