Full Itinerary

We will welcome you to the Imperial City of Cusco that sits at 3 400m / 11 155ft above see level. Cusco will take your breath away in more than one way. It will be a good idea to spend the day relaxing and acclimating to the high elevation.

Then if you are feeling okay, take the opportunity to explore the architectural wonder of the historical center. Spending time the picturesque Plaza De Armas, or bohemian neighborhood of San Blas. Try out some alpaca apparel, local Andean Cuisine, or a cup of coffee, cultivated locally.

  • 3* Accommodation: Maytaq Wasin or Waman Hotels
  • 4* Accommodation: Costa del Sol Ramada, Casa Andina Private Collection or Novotel Hotels

We will have an early pickup and a busy day today, meeting your guide in your hotel lobby at 4am. It will not take long before we start enjoying the valley views, on our way to Ollantaytambo train station, arriving with plenty of time to grab a quick breakfast and cup of coffee (not included).

We will catch the 6:10am train to KM104. Upon arrival at the trailhead, we will take a moment to check in for the hike (passports are essential for this process) and prepare for the day ahead, apply sunscreen, insect repellent and pack away our box lunches.

The first hour and a half of the hike will be a light climb. Along the way, we will stop at several viewpoints where you have an expansive view of the Urubamba River and the surrounding valley. It starts out impressive, and just gets more and more beautiful the steeper we climb.

Also, we will pass through several microclimates, including cloud forest, so be prepared for damp weather and even rain at any time of the year. The next hour and a half is going to be over an slightly steeper uphill with a beautiful waterfall as reward.

Once at the waterfall, we will have just one section of the hike remaining. After we cross over the bridge, we will start a steep incline to the spectacular Wiñay Wayna! (2,600m/8,500ft above sea level).

From this vantage point in the ruins, the views of the valley are stunning. We will explore this well preserved site (only rediscovered in 1942) with our guide sharing plenty of information about the space.

We will stop at a covered shelter at the Wiñay Wayna campground for our box lunch. This is the point where the Short Inca Trail and the Classic Inca Trail intersect.

Take advantage of the opportunity to use the restroom and enjoy the incredible flora and fauna of this subtropical microclimate that’s close to the jungle. Let us know of any food allergies or dietary restrictions at booking.

After lunch, you will have an hour long walk that rolls gently up and down. Prior to reach the Sun Gate, we will climb a steep set of steps known as the Gringo Killer steps. Passing through the Sun Gate you will have your first jaw dropping view of the great Machu Picchu.

So, make sure to savor the moment and take plenty of photos. Finally the last hour down from the Sun Gate offers many opportunities to take more photos of Machu Picchu from this unique vantage point.

Along the way we will find more important Inca sites between the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu. Enjoy your time walking in the footsteps of the Inca on the Inca Trail. But also, ask your guide all the questions you have about these historical places on the last stretch of your hike to Machu Picchu.

Once at Machu Picchu, you will have even more time to take photos from the viewing platform above the site. Today we will visit the Guard House, where you can take the famous postcard pictures of Machu Picchu.

We will arrive at the citadel in the afternoon, just as the archeological area starts to empty of tourists. This gives you a great opportunity to take beautiful photos in the afternoon light as the crowds are dispersing.

Take your time soaking it all in. After all, you will never get another first glance of Machu Picchu again. As dusk begins to bite, we will make our way down the mountain (via bus) to the town of Aguas Calientes, which sits nestled below.

Time to check in in your hotel. After we will meet for a celebratory dinner over a job well done. Then you will have some free time to spend as you wish, whether it is exploring the town or heading off for an early night.

  • Meals included: Box lunch and dinner in Aguas Calientes
  • Accommodation: 3* Ferre Hotel Machu Picchu
  • Difficulty: Moderate.

You will leave an overnight bag at the Ollantaytambo train station to be sent by train directly to Aguas Calientes.

As you start your hike, you will have views of the Ausangate Mountain and other glaciers surrounding you. Along the way you will be able to chat with locals, who keep traditional Quechua culture alive, learn about their traditional clothes and the significance of the different hats worn by men. Also, ask your guide to teach you a few phrases in Quechua!

Our Approach

Engineered for Acclimatization

SACRED VALLEY + ATV TOUR (Pisac + Moray + Maras + Ollantaytambo) - Orange Nation Peru ollantaytambo sacred valley cusco - Orange Nation Peru

We design this route in Cusco, not copy and paste. Day one is a full city tour at 3400 meters to help you adjust, not a rushed airport transfer. We visit the Sacred Valley on day two when you are ready for the lower altitude. We include Maras and Moray, sites many four day tours skip to save time. Walking is easy with plenty of stops for photos and history.

Dedicated to You, Hotel to Hotel

Book direct and we handle everything. Airport pickup, all tickets, train seats and Machu Picchu entry for Circuit 2. You carry only a daypack, we move your main luggage between hotels. Our guides are Cusco locals, fluent in English and certified in wilderness first aid. Every tour carries oxygen for altitude support. Groups are capped at eight.

Devoted to Our People

inca trail breakfast

Orange Nation is family owned in Cusco. Our founder started as a porter, so we built this company differently. Everyone receives a living wage above the local average, full health care and all gear provided free. Women have guided with us since 2018 and today lead some of our strongest teams. Each month we fund teachers and reforestation in the Sacred Valley communities you visit.

Things To Know Before You Go

  • Altitude is the main challenge, not distance
You sleep at 3400 meters in Cusco and visit Sacsayhuaman at 3700 meters. We start with the city tour for this reason. Arrive in Cusco at least one day early if you can, drink water and go easy on alcohol the first night.
  • No trekking, just walking
This is not a hike. Expect two to three hours of easy walking per day on cobblestones and gentle Inca steps with many stops. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip.
  • Weather changes fast
Cusco can be sunny, windy and rainy in the same afternoon. The Sacred Valley is warmer, Machu Picchu is humid cloud forest. Pack layers, sun hat and rain jacket every day.
  • Trains run on time
Your Machu Picchu day uses timed train and bus tickets. We meet you at your hotel and handle all transfers. Bring your original passport for train and entry checks.
  • Small group means small group
We cap at eight travelers. You get a dedicated local guide, not a rotating trainee. Hotels include breakfast. Lunches and dinners are flexible and on your own for choice.

We had a great experience doing the 4d3n Inca Trail. Our porters were so hard working and made sure our tents and equipment were always ready for us. The chef Mario was outstanding and prepared restaurant quality vegetarian food everyday. Our guide Carlos made the trip exceptional, always making sure we were informed and making sure we were all enjoying the trail. He went above and beyond to encourage me when I was unwell. He made the trip the best ever. A beautiful and wonderful trek.

Hiking the Short Inca Trail was hands-down one of the highlights of my entire trip to Peru. This trek is the perfect option if you want a taste of the iconic Inca Trail without committing to the full 4-day hike.

From the moment we started the hike at KM 104 Carlos our guide was amazing and patient. we were surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, lush cloud forests, and fascinating Inca ruins. The trail itself is moderately challenging—expect a steady incline, stone steps, and a bit of cardio—but it’s absolutely doable for anyone with a decent fitness level. The sense of accomplishment when you reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu is
