Full Itinerary

Early Departure & Sacred Valley Rail

Your journey begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 AM (or around 5:30 AM if staying in the Sacred Valley). You’ll travel by private vehicle to Ollantaytambo to board the morning train, departing at approximately 6:10 AM.

This scenic ride follows the Urubamba River into a narrowing canyon, offering a gradual transition from highland valleys into lush cloud forest. Since the hike begins shortly after arrival, bringing a packed breakfast is recommended.

KM 104 & The Chachabamba Start

Disembarking at KM 104 (2,100m), you enter the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail. After a brief checkpoint process, the trail begins at the nearby site of Chachabamba, a small but significant Inca complex set beside the river.

From here, the path climbs steadily for approximately 1.5 hours, following original stone pathways as you leave the valley behind and move into the higher cloud forest.

The Ascent to Wiñay Wayna

By late morning or early afternoon, you’ll reach Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m), one of the most remarkable sites along the trail. Built into a steep mountainside, it features extensive agricultural terraces and finely constructed stone buildings.

After a guided visit, you’ll stop for lunch at a designated rest area nearby. This break allows time to recover before the final section of the hike.

The Final Climb to the Sun Gate

In the afternoon, the trail continues along a relatively gentle section of the original Inca road toward Inti Punku. The final highlight is a short but steep set of stone steps often called the Monkey Steps or Gringo Killers just before reaching the pass.

Arriving at the Sun Gate in the late afternoon offers your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu, typically after the busiest hours of the day. The softer light and reduced crowds make this one of the most memorable moments of the journey.

Descent to Machu Picchu

From Inti Punku, you’ll begin a gradual 45-minute descent along the original Inca pathway toward the upper sector of Machu Picchu. This stretch offers continuously changing perspectives of the citadel, with terraces, temples, and mountain backdrops revealing themselves as you descend.

You’ll arrive near the Guard House, one of the most iconic panoramic viewpoints. Here, you’ll have time to pause, take photographs, and receive a brief orientation from your guide, helping you understand the layout of the site in preparation for your more in-depth visit the following day. Arriving in the late afternoon means fewer visitors and softer light, making it an ideal moment to take in the scale and setting of Machu Picchu.

Transfer to Aguas Calientes & Evening (Hotel & Dinner)

After your time at the upper viewpoints, you’ll exit the citadel and board the shuttle bus for a 20–25 minute descent along the winding road to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu.

Upon arrival, you’ll check into your hotel where you can enjoy a hot shower and time to rest after the day’s hike. The evening is intentionally relaxed to allow for recovery. Depending on your itinerary, you’ll meet your guide for dinner at a local restaurant, where you’ll also receive a short briefing about the next day’s schedule, entry timing, and circuit through Machu Picchu.

You may also have a bit of free time to explore Aguas Calientes, visit the local markets, or simply unwind before an early start the next morning.

  • Highlights A complete Inca Trail journey from Chachabamba → Wiñay Wayna → Sun Gate (Inti Punku) combining cloud forest trekking, major archaeological sites, and a late-afternoon first panoramic reveal of Machu Picchu via its original Inca entrance
  • Trekking Time ~6–7 hours including guided stops.
  • Distance ~12 km / 7.5 miles.
  • Elevation 2,100m → 2,650m → 2,720m.
  • Key Sites
    • Chachabamba trailhead ceremonial site.
    • Wiñay Wayna iconic cliffside terraces.
    • Inti Punku first panoramic view of Machu Picchu.
  • Terrain Stone Inca paths steep stair climbs ridge walking cloud forest Climate Warm valleys transitioning to cool misty high forest.
  • Accommodation 3★ hotel in Aguas Calientes included.
  • Access Sun Gate entry plus external Machu Picchu viewpoint no internal entry Day 1.

Early Entry to Machu Picchu

After an early breakfast (around 5:00 AM), you’ll board one of the first shuttle buses for the ascent back to Machu Picchu. Arriving at opening time allows you to experience the sanctuary in its most atmospheric state—cool morning air, drifting mist, and the first light illuminating the stone structures.

This quiet window offers a completely different perspective from the previous afternoon: where Day 1 was about the grand reveal, Day 2 is about understanding the city itself.

The Royal Sector Exploration (Circuit 3)

Your guided tour focuses on Circuit 3, which takes you into the functional and ceremonial heart of Machu Picchu. Over approximately two hours, your guide will bring the site to life, explaining not just what you see but how it was used.

Highlights:

  • Temple of the Sun
A finely curved stone tower aligned with astronomical events, showcasing the Incas’ precision engineering and spiritual connection to the cosmos.
  • Temple of the Condor
One of the most fascinating features in the citadel, where natural rock formations and carved stone combine to form the shape of a condor, an important sacred animal in Inca belief. Beneath it, a cave-like chamber is thought to have ceremonial or ritual significance.
  • Temple of the Three Windows
One of the most iconic structures in Machu Picchu, featuring three trapezoidal windows believed to symbolize the Inca worldview of three realms (the underworld, the human world, and the heavens). Depending on the exact route of Circuit 3, this temple is typically viewed from nearby vantage points rather than entered directly.
  • Sacred Fountains
A series of still-functioning water channels that demonstrate the Incas’ advanced hydraulic engineering and the importance of ritual purification.
  • Temple of the Rainbow
A lesser-known but culturally significant area associated with ceremonial symbolism and elite spaces within the city.
  • Residential & Royal Areas
You’ll walk through living quarters once occupied by nobility and priests, gaining insight into daily life, social hierarchy, and how the city functioned as a seasonal royal estate.

Throughout the tour, your guide will connect architecture, astronomy, religion, and daily life-transforming Machu Picchu from a beautiful ruin into a living, intelligible city.

Optional Hikes (Pre-booked Permits Required)

If you’ve secured permits in advance, you may extend your experience with a hike up:

  • Huayna Picchu (steep, dramatic views over the citadel), or
  • Machu Picchu Mountain (higher, more gradual, panoramic vantage point)

These hikes offer a different scale and perspective of the sanctuary and surrounding Andes.

The Scenic Rail Journey to Ollantaytambo & Return To Cusco (Optional Hotel Stay)

After your guided exploration, you’ll descend to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll have free time to enjoy lunch or relax before your return journey.

In the afternoon, you’ll board the Expedition Train back to Ollantaytambo (typically around 3:20 PM). For those seeking a more panoramic experience, an optional upgrade to the Vistadome Train is available for approximately $67 USD per person, offering larger panoramic windows, enhanced views of the Sacred Valley, and onboard cultural presentations.

Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, a private transfer will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Cusco, with an expected arrival time of approximately 7:00 PM.

Alternatively, to avoid the 1 hour 45 minute evening drive back to Cusco, you may choose to stay overnight in Ollantaytambo. We offer a comfortable hotel option at Andenes del Inca, conveniently located near the train station. Rooms are available from $60 USD, providing a relaxed and practical way to conclude your journey in the Sacred Valley.

Itinerary Overview

  • Trekking Time ~2–3 hours guided visit.
  • Distance ~3–5 km inside citadel only.
  • Elevation 2,430m.
  • Climate Cool morning mist clearing through mid-morning Accommodation Return to Cusco or optional overnight in Ollantaytambo $60 at Andenes del Inca Circuits Circuit 3 Royal Sector plus optional Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain permit required.

Useful Information

Enjoy a later start on Day 1 by staying at Andenes del Inca in Ollantaytambo before heading to KM 82. Alternatively, book a night here after Day 2 to avoid the evening drive to Cusco. A private transfer will be waiting to ensure a seamless connection.

Over two days, you walk a curated section of the original Inca Trail, arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate in the quieter afternoon hours, after the main flow of visitors has passed. The result is a calmer, more meaningful first view of the citadel that feels genuinely earned.

Instead of descending to Aguas Calientes, you remain in the mountains at a fully supported campsite near the final section of the trail. This positioning allows for a quieter approach the next morning, followed by a guided visit of Circuit 1 & 3 across the citadel’s key viewpoints and sectors.

The guys were very efficient throughout the trip and attentive when we arrived at the campsite. The kitchen service was super delicious , the food quality and healthy, dishes suitable for people (vegans) and a buffet that has nothing to envy others.
Their kindness and efficiency are greatly appreciated for this journey to the Inca Way.

We had a great experience doing the 4d3n Inca Trail. Our porters were so hard working and made sure our tents and equipment were always ready for us. The chef Mario was outstanding and prepared restaurant quality vegetarian food everyday. Our guide Carlos made the trip exceptional, always making sure we were informed and making sure we were all enjoying the trail. He went above and beyond to encourage me when I was unwell. He made the trip the best ever. A beautiful and wonderful trek.

Hiking the Short Inca Trail was hands-down one of the highlights of my entire trip to Peru. This trek is the perfect option if you want a taste of the iconic Inca Trail without committing to the full 4-day hike.

From the moment we started the hike at KM 104 Carlos our guide was amazing and patient. we were surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, lush cloud forests, and fascinating Inca ruins. The trail itself is moderately challenging—expect a steady incline, stone steps, and a bit of cardio—but it’s absolutely doable for anyone with a decent fitness level. The sense of accomplishment when you reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu is
