Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 2026
Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 2 Days Hiking via the Sun Gate
The Short Inca Trail is the only 2 day route that lets you walk into Machu Picchu through Inti Punku on original Inca pavement. You start at KM 104 (2,000m), climb 6 hours through cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna, then follow the ridge to the Sun Gate. That first view of the citadel comes in the afternoon, after the morning crowds have left. You will sleep one night in a 3★ hotel in Aguas Calientes with a hot shower for a good nights rest, then return to Machu Picchu very the next morning for a full guided tour. For 2026, this itinerary includes both Circuit 1 and Circuit 3.
No camping. No 4,215m pass. Just 12km of the best-preserved Inca Trail.

Highlights
- KM 104 Trailhead
Day 1 starts with the early train to KM 104. After crossing the Urubamba River you hike the most intact 12km section of the Inca Trail, passing Chachabamba and climbing through cloud forest. - Wiñay Wayna
Midday stop at the terraced complex at 2,650m. Explore agricultural platforms, ceremonial fountains, and jungle-covered structures before lunch at the site. - Sun Gate Arrival (Inti Punku)
Reach the Sun Gate in the afternoon for your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. Arrive after the 2pm departure wave for quieter photos in golden light. - Circuit 1 – Panoramic Route
Enter the citadel on Day 1 for the upper terraces and Guardhouse viewpoint. This is the classic postcard angle with Huayna Picchu behind, done when light is best. - Hotel Not Camping
Sleep one night in Aguas Calientes in a 3-star hotel with private bathroom and hot shower. Your overnight bag travels by train, you hike with a daypack only. - Circuit 3 – Royal Route
Return early on Day 2 for a 2-hour guided tour of the lower citadel. Visit the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Three Windows, Intihuatana, Temple of the Condor, and Royal Sector. - Scenic Train Journey
Travel both ways through the Sacred Valley on the Expedition train along the Urubamba River, with views of Wiñay Wayna high on the canyon wall. - Small Groups, Full Permits
Maximum 8 travelers. Licensed English-speaking guide, Short Inca Trail permit secured 6 months in advance, all logistics handled from Cusco.

- Llama terraces on the upper agricultural platforms.
- Kallanka ruins, probable chicha beer hall outside the city walls.
- Inca Trail arrival path through cloud forest (entry walk).
Circuit 3: Royalty Route (Lower Citadel)

Full access to lower temples and houses

Our Approach
Built for the Sun Gate, Not the Campsite

Some agencies sell the Short Inca Trail as a rushed day hike. We built it as a proper 2 day experience. You walk the best 12km of original Inca pavement from KM 104, arrive at Inti Punku in the afternoon when the morning crowds have left, and you get Circuit 1 for the classic postcard photo in golden light. Then you sleep in a real hotel in Aguas Calientes with a hot shower and private bathroom, not in a tent.
We designed this for 2026 permits. You get both Circuit 1 on Day 1 and Circuit 3 on Day 2, the Panoramic Route plus the Royal Route. That means you see the Guardhouse viewpoint and the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Condor, and the Intihuatana, not one or the other.
No 4,215m Pass, All the Magic

The Classic 4 day trail takes you over Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,215m. The Short Trail starts at KM 104 at 2,000m and climbs to 2,720m at the Sun Gate. You get cloud forest, Wiñay Wayna terraces, and the Inca steps without the altitude suffering or camping. Your overnight bag travels by train, you hike with a daypack only.
Small Groups, Real Guides

We run a maximum of 8 trekkers, not 16. Your guide is a licensed Inca Trail specialist from Cusco who hikes this route weekly. Groups are small so you get time at Wiñay Wayna for explanations, time at the Sun Gate for photos without being rushed, and real interpretation inside Machu Picchu on Circuit 3 the next morning.

Circuits and Safety
The 2-Day Short Inca Trail is a point-to-point cloud forest hike, not a high-altitude camping expedition. We designed it around the final 12km of original Inca pavement, one major archaeological site, and a hotel night that prioritizes recovery over tents.
By starting at KM 104 and timing your arrival at Inti Punku for mid-afternoon, you avoid the morning day-trip crowds inside Machu Picchu. Then by sleeping in Aguas Calientes at 2,040m, you descend nearly 700m from the Sun Gate before your next morning tour. That pacing is why this trek works for active travelers with 1 night in Cusco, you reach 2,720m but never sleep above 2,050m. For 2026, your Machu Picchu ticket includes both Circuit 1 and Circuit 3, completed across two days.
Route Structure
- Day 1 KM 104 to Machu Picchu via Sun Gate
We start at 4am from Cusco and drive to Ollantaytambo for the 6:10am train to KM 104 at 2,000m. After passport control you hike 12km on original stone to Chachabamba, then climb to Wiñay Wayna at 2,650m for a guided visit and lunch. Continue to Inti Punku at 2,720m, arriving mid-afternoon. Descend to Machu Picchu for Circuit 1 (upper terraces and Guardhouse viewpoint). Exit and take the bus to Aguas Calientes. You carry only a daypack, your overnight bag travels by train. - Day 2 Machu Picchu Circuit 3 and return
Wake at 5am. We take the first bus to Machu Picchu for Circuit 3 (Temple of the Sun, House of the Inca, Royal Tomb, Water Fountains, Temple of the Condor, and Agricultural Terraces) for 2 hours. After free time return by bus and Expedition train to Ollantaytambo, then private van to Cusco. No camping, hotel breakfast included.
Safety Management
- Altitude First
Maximum altitude is 2,720m at Inti Punku for 20 minutes only. You sleep at 2,040m in Aguas Calientes. We recommend 1-2 nights in Cusco before the trek for comfort on the steps. Guides monitor symptoms and carry pulse oximeters. - Trail Safety
The Short Inca Trail is original Inca stonework, often wet, steep and uneven, especially the Gringo Killer steps before the Sun Gate and the descent to Machu Picchu. We set a slow, steady pace. Trekking poles with rubber tips are highly recommended and available for rent. Guides carry first aid kits and emergency oxygen on all departures. - Hotel Recovery
We use 3★hotels in Aguas Calientes with private bathrooms, hot water, and No camping means no exposure to cold nights. Strict leave-no-trace protocol on trail, no campfires. - Real Guides
Certified English-speaking guides from Cusco who specialize in the KM 104 route. Maximum 8 travelers per guide. Guides are trained in wilderness first aid and return season after season on this route.
Weather and Terrain
The route moves through two climate zones in one day. Mornings at KM 104 can be 10°C with mist, afternoons in cloud forest are 25°C and humid with rain possible year-round. We check conditions at the 6pm briefing and adjust start times if needed. The advantage of the hotel night is flexibility, you are dry and rested if weather moves in.
What We Provide for Safety
- WFR-certified guides with radio communication.
- First aid kit and emergency oxygen bottle on all days.
- Pre-trek briefing at our office the night before.
- Box lunch Day 1 prepared fresh with dietary options.
- Overnight bag transfer by train (max 5kg per Peruvian rail regulations).
- Private support team with evacuation plan to Aguas Calientes clinic.
How to Arrive Ready
- Spend at least 1 night in Cusco (3,400m) before Day 1, 2 nights ideal for the stone steps.
- Bring layers for cool mornings and hot humid afternoons, plus broken-in boots for stone steps.
- Pack a headlamp for early hotel departure and rain jacket for cloud forest.
- Tell your guide immediately if you feel headache, nausea, or dizziness. We control pace and can descend quickly to Aguas Calientes.
- Use trekking poles on the steep descent from Inti Punku to protect knees.
- Carry 1.5 to 2L water capacity. Dehydration worsens fatigue in humidity.
This is why we run the Short Inca Trail as a small-group hotel-based expedition with strategic timing, you get the 12km historic approach, afternoon at Inti Punku, and both Machu Picchu circuits in 2026, with professional support managing the stone trail, weather, and logistics.
FAQs for the Short Inca Trail 2 Days 1 Night Hotel
- What is the main difference between the Short Inca Trail hotel vs camping version?
Same 12km hike from KM 104 to the Sun Gate. Both visit Wiñay Wayna and enter Machu Picchu via Inti Punku. The hotel version takes the bus down to Aguas Calientes for a 3 star hotel with hot shower, private bathroom, and restaurant dinner. The camping version stays at Puente Ruinas by the river with tents. Hotel is more comfortable, better sleep, and you do not need a sleeping bag. We recommend hotel for 95% of travelers.
- Do I need a permit for the Short Inca Trail?
Yes. The government releases only 250 permits per day for the Short Trail, and they are linked to your passport, non-transferable. They sell out 4 to 6 months ahead for May to September. We include the Short Inca Trail permit plus Machu Picchu entrance for Circuit 1 on Day 1 and Circuit 3 on Day 2. This is the only 2026 itinerary that includes both circuits as standard.
- How hard is the 2 day hike?
Moderate. Day 1 is 12km with 6 to 7 hours of walking on original Inca stone steps. You climb from KM 104 at 2,000m to Wiñay Wayna at 2,650m in about 3 hours, then to the Sun Gate at 2,720m. There is no high pass like the Classic 4 day trail. If you can walk uphill for 3 hours with breaks and handle uneven steps, you can do it. Trekking poles with rubber tips are highly recommended for the descent to Machu Picchu.
- What is the highest point and will I get altitude sickness?
Sun Gate at 2,720m, which is lower than Cusco at 3,400m. Most people feel fine because you start low at KM 104 and sleep even lower in Aguas Calientes at 2,040m. You do not need extra acclimatization beyond arriving in Cusco the night before for the 4am pick up. We carry emergency oxygen.
- How far do we walk each day?
Day 1: 12km from KM 104 to Machu Picchu via Wiñay Wayna and the Sun Gate, then bus to Aguas Calientes. Day 2: almost no hiking, just 2 to 3km of flat walking during the 2 hour guided tour of Machu Picchu on Circuit 3. All the hard work is done on Day 1.
- When is the best time to go?
Dry season May to September for the clearest views from the Sun Gate. April and October are excellent shoulder months with green cloud forest and fewer people. The trail is closed every February for maintenance. Wet season November to March is doable but expect rain in the afternoon, bring a good rain jacket.
- What is the hotel like in Aguas Calientes?
3 star hotel with private bathroom, hot shower, wifi, and breakfast included. Your overnight bag travels by train from Ollantaytambo, so you have fresh clothes for dinner. Rooms are clean and comfortable, not luxury. It is a huge upgrade from camping and you sleep at 2,040m which helps recovery.
- What will the weather be like?
Everything in one day. KM 104 is hot and humid cloud forest at 2,000m, bring insect repellent. Wiñay Wayna can be misty. The Sun Gate at 2,720m is windy and cooler. Machu Picchu in the afternoon is often sunny and warm. Pack layers: t-shirt, fleece, rain jacket with hood. It can rain any month in cloud forest.
- Is the Short Inca Trail crowded?
Less crowded than the Classic 4 day. You will see about 30 to 50 other trekkers on your day, not hundreds. The advantage of our itinerary: you arrive at the Sun Gate at 3:30pm when day trippers are leaving, and you get Circuit 1 in golden light with few people. Day 2 you enter at 6am before the trains arrive from Cusco.
- What time do we get back to Cusco on Day 2?
Train leaves Aguas Calientes at 2:55pm or 3:20pm, arrives Ollantaytambo around 4:40pm. Private van to Cusco takes 1 hour 45 minutes via Chinchero. You are back at your Cusco hotel between 6:30pm and 7:30pm. If you want to stay in Ollantaytambo after the trek to avoid the drive, we can drop you there at no extra cost.
Orange Nation Practical FAQs
- Where is your office in Cusco?
Historic center on Calle Garcilaso, 5 minutes from Plaza de Armas. We send exact address and WhatsApp pin with your confirmation. Briefing is at 6pm the night before at our office.
- Can I leave my main luggage in Cusco?
Yes. Free secure storage at our office. Take only your daypack on the trail. Your overnight bag up to 7kg goes by train to your hotel in Aguas Calientes.
- How much should I acclimatize?
Arrive in Cusco or the Sacred Valley at least one night before the trek. You sleep lower than Cusco on the trail, so one night is enough for most people. Hydrate, avoid alcohol the night before.
- How much time do we actually get inside Machu Picchu?
Twice. Day 1: 45 to 60 minutes on Circuit 1 for the panoramic Guardhouse viewpoint at sunset. Day 2: 2 hour guided tour on Circuit 3 plus 30 minutes free time in the lower citadel. Total about 3.5 hours inside, more than any one day ticket allows.
- Do you provide trekking poles?
We do not include poles, but you can rent a pair for $15 USD. Must have rubber tips to protect the Inca stones. Reserve at booking.
- Can I upgrade the train?
Yes. Vistadome upgrade is $67 USD per person for panoramic windows and show on the return from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. Recommended for photographers.
- What is included for food?
Day 1: box lunch at Wiñay Wayna, dinner in Aguas Calientes. Day 2: breakfast at hotel. Bring snacks and at least 1.5 liters of water for the hike. Lunch on Day 2 in Aguas Calientes is not included.
- How much should I tip the guide?
Tipping is customary but optional. For this 2 day trek, $10 to $15 USD per person total for your guide is standard. Give in cash soles at the end of Day 2 in Cusco.
