Sacred Valley Tour from Ollantaytambo or Urubamba to Cusco

Sacred Valley Tour from Ollantaytambo or Urubamba to Cusco

Discover the Inca heartland in one day, starting where most tours end.

Tucked between Cusco and Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley runs warmer, greener, and deeper in living culture than the city. Think Andes peaks, ancient fortresses, and villages like Pisac and Ollantaytambo where Quechua traditions never stopped.

This private tour is built for travelers who base in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba after Machu Picchu, or who simply want to explore the more of the valley. Skip the 3-hour round trip from Cusco. Start in the valley, see everything, and finish in Cusco by dinner.

Why Start in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba?

  • It saves time. You wake up in the valley and start exploring immediately.
  • Better for acclimatization. Sleep lower at 2,792m in Ollantaytambo vs 3,400m in Cusco.
  • Perfect post Machu Picchu. We pick you up next morning and show you the rest of the valley.

Highlights for the Sacred Valley Tour

  • Ollantaytambo Fortress
Start at the most intact Inca town in Peru. Climb the Sun Temple terraces, see the ceremonial fountains, and the massive pink granite blocks left mid-transport when the Spanish arrived. Your guide explains how Manco Inca used this site to defeat Pizarro’s army. One hour guided.
  • Moray Agricultural Lab
Drive 1 hour to the famous circular terraces. The Incas built this natural amphitheater to create 20+ microclimates, testing 250 crop varieties from jungle to coast. Each level drops temperature by 1°C. This is how they fed an empire.
  • Maras Salt Mines
10 minutes from Moray, over 3,000 salt ponds spill down the mountainside. Fed by a salty spring used since pre-Inca times, local families still harvest pink Maras salt by hand. Walk the edge, meet the miners, buy salt direct. Entry 20 soles.
  • Urubamba Lunch Stop
Descend to the valley floor for lunch at a local restaurant. Not included, budget 50-70 soles for the buffet. Excellent vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options with Andean ingredients.
  • Pisac Ruins + Market
Drive 1 hour along the Urubamba River to Pisac. Perched high above the valley, this huge complex has agricultural terraces, water channels, temples, and South America’s largest Inca cemetery with 2,000+ tombs carved into the cliff. If it’s a market day, we stop in Pisac town after.
  • Scenic Valley Drive
Between sites you pass Mirador of Taray viewpoint, snow-capped Veronica and Chicon peaks, and traditional villages. Your guide points out Inca terracing still farmed today.

Our Approach

Built for the Valley

Save hours driving Cusco → valley → Cusco. You wake up in the Sacred Valley and start exploring immediately. We pick you up in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba, hit Ollantaytambo fortress before the buses arrive, and use the whole day for sites, not transit. You see Pisac, Maras, Moray and Ollantaytambo with zero backtracking.

We designed this for travelers post-Machu Picchu or pre-train. It’s the full valley in one day without the 5am Cusco pick-up or the late-night return. You get culture all day, and you’re back in Cusco for dinner, or we drop you at the airport.

Private Means Personal

You get your own licensed guide and private van. No waiting for strangers, no fixed scripts, no rushed photo stops. Want 20 extra minutes at Pisac’s terraces? Want to skip the market for more time in Ollantaytambo? You decide the pace.

Our guides are from Urubamba and Ollantaytambo, not Cusco city. They grew up in these villages, know the farmers at Maras, and explain the Inca sites as living history — not textbook facts. You get real context at every stop, plus time for questions.

Full Itinerary

We pick you up from your hotel lobby or Airbnb in Ollantaytambo at 7:30am or Urubamba at 7:00am. Your private guide and driver meet you for a briefing, then we start exploring immediately without the 2-hour drive from Cusco first.

Ollantaytambo Archaeological Site
We walk 5 minutes from your hotel into the most intact Inca town in Peru. Your guide takes you through the Sun Temple, royal baths, ceremonial fountains, and the massive stone terraces climbing the hillside. This is where Manco Inca defeated Pizarro’s army in 1536. You’ll see the unfinished pink granite blocks left mid-transport when the Spanish arrived, plus the original Inca street grid still used today. 1 hour guided tour, moderate stone steps. Best light and no crowds this early.

Drive to Moray
Scenic 1-hour drive up onto the Maras plateau. We pass adobe villages, quinoa fields, and stop for photos of snow-capped Veronica and Chicon peaks. Your guide explains how the valley’s microclimates shaped Inca agriculture.

Moray Circular Terraces
The Inca agricultural laboratory. These giant concentric terraces drop 30m into a natural sinkhole, creating 20+ microclimates. Temperature shifts 1°C per level, letting the Incas test 250+ crops from coast, jungle, and highlands. Walk down into the center to feel the change. Your guide shows you the irrigation channels and explains how this site fed an empire. 45 minutes on site.

Maras Salt Mines
10-minute drive to the edge of the valley. More than 3,000 salt ponds cascade down the mountainside in a bright white quilt. Fed by a natural salty spring used since pre-Inca times, local families still harvest pink Maras salt by hand in the dry season. Walk the upper viewpoints, see the evaporation process, and meet miners if they’re working. Buy salt direct from the community, 10 soles per bag. Entry 20 soles cash, not included. 45 minutes.

Urubamba for Lunch
30-minute descent to the valley floor. We stop at a local restaurant in Urubamba for a buffet lunch. Not included, budget 50-70 soles. Wide selection of Andean dishes, quinoa soups, fresh trout, salad bar, and excellent vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. One hour to eat and rest.

Drive to Pisac via Taray Viewpoint
1-hour drive along the Urubamba River through Calca and Lamay. We stop at Mirador of Taray for the classic Sacred Valley panorama, the river winding below, agricultural terraces, and mountains stretching to Pisac. 15 minutes for photos.

Pisac Archaeological Park
High above Pisac town, this massive complex has it all: agricultural terraces bigger than Ollantaytambo, ceremonial baths, the Intihuatana sun dial, water channels still flowing, and South America’s largest Inca cemetery with 2,000+ tombs carved into the cliff face. Your guide covers the military, religious, and agricultural zones in a 1.5-hour loop. Moderate uphill walking on original Inca steps. If it’s a market day and you want to stop, we add 30 minutes in Pisac town after.

Return Drive to Cusco
1-hour drive back via the Sacsayhuaman road with views over Cusco. Your guide debriefs the day and answers last questions.

Cusco Hotel or Airport Drop-Off
We drop you at your hotel, Airbnb in Cusco, or Cusco Airport at no extra cost. Perfect timing for evening flights.

Top 10 FAQs for the Sacred Valley Tour from Ollantaytambo to Cusco

  1. Why start in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba instead of Cusco?

You save 3+ hours of driving. Most tours leave Cusco at 5am, spend 1.5 hours getting to the valley, then 1.5 hours back. You wake up in the valley and start at Ollantaytambo before the buses arrive. Perfect if you’re coming off Machu Picchu or want to sleep lower at 2,792m instead of 3,400m in Cusco.

  1. Is this a group tour or private?

100% private. Only you and your party in the van with a dedicated guide and driver. No waiting for other travelers, no fixed scripts. You set the pace and can adjust stops. Price is per person and goes down with more people in your group.

  1. How much walking is there? Is it difficult?

Easy to moderate. You’ll walk stone steps at Ollantaytambo and Pisac, ∼3km total over the day. Both sites have parking lots halfway up if you want to skip 200 steps. Moray and Maras are short flat walks from the van. No trekking required. Suitable for kids and seniors who are mobile.

  1. Will altitude be a problem?

This tour is actually easier on altitude than starting from Cusco. You sleep in Ollantaytambo at 2,792m or Urubamba at 2,870m, then go up to 3,500m at Moray for 45 minutes before descending. Most people feel fine. We carry emergency oxygen and take it slow. Drink water, skip alcohol the night before.

  1. What is not included? Do I need cash?

Yes, bring Peruvian soles in cash. Entrance fees are not included: Boleto Turistico is 70 soles for the 1-day partial or 130 soles for 10-day general, covering Pisac, Moray, and Ollantaytambo. Maras Salt Mines is 20 soles separate. No cards accepted at sites. Lunch in Urubamba is also not included, budget 50-70 soles for buffet.

  1. Can we finish at the airport or in Ollantaytambo instead of Cusco?

Absolutely. Tell your guide in the morning. We drop you at Cusco Airport, your Cusco hotel, or back in Ollantaytambo/Urubamba around 6:00pm at no extra cost. Great if you have an evening flight or want to stay another night in the valley.

  1. Is lunch included and what are the options?

Lunch is not included so you can choose. We stop in Urubamba at a local restaurant with a big buffet: quinoa soups, fresh trout, lomo saltado, salad bar, and desserts. Excellent vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. About 50-70 soles per person. If you prefer a quick set menu or your own snacks, just tell your guide.

  1. What should I wear and bring?

Closed shoes with grip, trainers or hiking shoes. Stone steps get slippery. Layers for 8°C morning to 24°C afternoon: t-shirt, long sleeve, fleece. Sun hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+. Small daypack with 1L water, snacks, passport for the Boleto, and cash. Rain jacket Nov-Mar. No special gear needed.

  1. Can we customize the tour or add stops?

Yes, that’s the point of private. Want 30 extra minutes at Pisac? Want to skip the town market? Add Chinchero weaving co-op, animal sanctuary, or coffee stop? Tell us at booking or that morning. We adjust timing as long as we finish by 6pm. You can also extend to 2 days.

  1. Why choose this over the regular Sacred Valley tour from Cusco?

Time and comfort. You avoid the 5am Cusco pick-up and 2 hours of backtracking. You get Ollantaytambo empty before 9am, then hit Moray and Maras while Cusco buses are still driving out. You see all four main sites without feeling rushed, and you’re back in Cusco for dinner. If you’re already in the valley after Machu Picchu, this is the only tour that makes sense.

Experience the full Sacred Valley in one day, with an ATV adventure through the heart of it.

This is not a standard bus tour that skips the best parts. We start early from Cusco and drive deep into the valley, visiting the massive terraces of Pisac with its 2,000 tomb necropolis, then switch from van to ATV in Maras for the fun part. You will drive your own quad bike across the high puna, through Quechua farming villages, to two of Peru’s most unique sites.

First, the Maras Salt Mines. More than 3,000 bright white salt ponds cascade down the mountainside, fed by a natural salty spring used since pre-Inca times. The local families still harvest pink Maras salt by hand, and it supplies over 90 percent of Peru today.

Then, ride on to Moray. The Incas carved giant circular terraces into a natural sinkhole to create over 15 different microclimates. Your guide will show you how they tested more than 250 crops here, bringing soils from the jungle, coast and highlands to perfect agriculture for an empire.

We finish at Ollantaytambo, the living Inca town and fortress where Manco Inca won his last battle against the Spanish. Walk the Sun Temple, the water fountains and the huge unfinished stones on the hillside.

From $150 USD per person. Private van all day, ATV with guide, helmet and fuel included, plus entry to all sites with the Tourist Ticket. No ATV experience needed, automatic quads and full safety briefing provided.

Our Approach

Built for Adventure, Not Bus Windows

ollantaytambo sacred valley cusco - Orange Nation Peru

You will see the Sacred Valley from every angle, not just through a van window. We combine comfortable private transport with your own ATV ride across the high puna, the most exciting part of the day. You visit all four iconic sites, Pisac, Maras, Moray and Ollantaytambo, and between Maras and Moray you trade the highway for quiet dirt tracks, riding past adobe villages, farmland and open Andean views that buses simply cannot reach.

We designed this as the most complete Sacred Valley day trip. You start with culture at Pisac and a camelid farm, you get adrenaline on the ATVs in the middle of the day, and you finish with history at Ollantaytambo. It is long but varied, so you never feel stuck on a bus.

ATVs That Are Actually Safe

We use automatic Honda and Yamaha 250cc and 300cc quad bikes, serviced weekly. Every rider gets a full-face helmet, gloves and a safety lesson before we leave the base. No previous experience needed, if you can ride a bicycle you can drive these. Our guides ride lead and sweep, with radio contact to the van. We ride in pairs on quiet farm roads and open fields, never on the main highway.

Local Valley Guides

Our guides are from Urubamba and Ollantaytambo, not Cusco city. They are licensed tourism professionals who grew up herding in these fields. Groups are capped at 8 people per van, with a maximum of 2 ATVs per guide on the trail, so you get real stories at Pisac and Ollantaytambo, not a script.

Mountain Bike tour to Moray and Maras Salt Mines Day Tour

Mountain Bike Tour to Moray and Maras Salt Mines Day Tour

Experience the Sacred Valley the way the locals do, on two wheels and off the paved road.

This is not a van tour with a bike photo stop. From Cruz Pata at 3,400 meters, you ride mostly downhill through Quechua farmland with the snow-capped Andes in front of you. You will freewheel past alpaca herds, adobe villages and ancient irrigation channels before reaching two of Peru’s most unique sites in one morning.

First, Moray. The Incas carved giant circular terraces into a natural bowl to create more than 15 different microclimates. Your guide will show you how they used this agricultural laboratory to test over 250 crops, from potatoes to quinoa, long before modern greenhouses existed.

Then, descend to Maras. More than 3,000 bright white salt ponds spill down the hillside like a staircase. A natural hot spring feeds them with salty water, a method used since pre-Inca times that still produces 90 percent of Peru’s salt today. You will park your bike at the viewpoint, walk the edge of the pans, and see families harvesting salt by hand.

From $57 USD per person when you book as part of a multi-day trek. Private van, top-quality mountain bikes, helmet and gloves included. No experience needed, just basic bike balance. The route is 70 percent downhill on dirt tracks and quiet valley roads.

Duration: 1 day, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Start and End: Cusco hotel pick-up and drop-off
Max Altitude: 3,500 m at Cruz Pata, riding down to 2,900 m in Maras
Group Size: Maximum 8 riders for safety and personal attention
Difficulty: Easy to moderate, mostly downhill

Mountain Bike tour to Moray and Maras Salt Mines Day Tour - Orange Nation Peru

Highlights for the Moray and Maras Bike Tour

  • True Downhill Riding
Start high at Cruz Pata and ride almost entirely downhill. No big climbs, just flowing dirt tracks through farmland with views of the Vilcanota mountain range.
  • Moray, the Inca Greenhouse
Explore the famous circular terraces with your guide. Learn how each level creates a different temperature, allowing the Incas to experiment with crops from jungle to highlands in one place.
  • Maras Salt Mines Up Close
Visit the 3,000-plus salt ponds still worked by local families. See the salty spring water evaporate in the sun and taste the pink Maras salt fresh from the pan.
  • Off the Beaten Track
Ride through working Quechua communities, not tourist highways. Stop for photos with farmers, adobe houses and herds of sheep, away from the bus crowds.
  • All Equipment Included
We provide quality Trek or Specialized mountain bikes with front suspension, helmet, gloves and a support van that follows the group. You just pedal.
  • Local Expert Guides
Ride with a Cusco-born bike guide who is also a certified tourism professional. Small groups mean time for stories, photos and a safe pace for everyone.
  • Half-Day Adventure, Back for Dinner
Pick-up at 8:00 am, back in Cusco by 3:30 to 4:00 pm. Perfect as an acclimatization day before your Inca Trail or as an active rest day after Machu Picchu.
  • Great Value Add-On
From $57 per person for groups of five or more when booked with any multi-day tour. Entrance fees to Moray (Boleto Turistico) and Maras (20 soles) are paid locally in cash.

Our Approach

Engineered for Fun, Not Suffering

Some agencies drive you to Moray, walk you around, then drive to Maras. We ride. You start at Cruz Pata at 3,500 meters and roll almost entirely downhill for 35 kilometers. You get the views, the fresh air and the adrenaline without a brutal climb at altitude. The route follows quiet farm tracks used by local Quechua farmers, not the tourist bus highway.

We designed this as the perfect first full day in Cusco. You are active, but you are descending into richer air in the Sacred Valley. By the time you reach Maras at 2,900 meters, breathing is easier and your legs are warmed up for a trek the next day.

Bikes That Actually Work

We provide Trek Marlin or Specialized Rockhopper mountain bikes with front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes and 29 inch wheels. Every bike is serviced after each tour. We carry your size from XS to XL, and we fit you at Cruz Pata before we start. Helmet and gloves are included and mandatory.

Local Bike Guides

Our guides are from Cusco and ride this valley every week. They are licensed tourism professionals with wilderness first aid, not just drivers with a bike rack. Groups are capped at eight riders so you get real instruction on the dirt sections and time for photos without being rushed.

Sacsayhuaman and Pisac 1 Day Tour

Sacsayhuaman and Pisac 1-Day Tour

See the head of the Inca puma and the gateway to the Sacred Valley in one day, no hiking boots required.

This is our most complete Cusco day tour, designed for your first full day at altitude. You start above the city at Sacsayhuaman, the massive zigzag fortress-temple that protected Cusco, then follow the ancient road out of town through three smaller but fascinating sites, Q’enqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay, all included on one ticket.

By midday you drop into the Sacred Valley. We stop at the Taray viewpoint for the classic green-carpet photo, then climb to the mountaintop city of Pisac. You’ll walk the Inca tunnel, explore the pink-granite temples, and stand above the largest Inca cemetery in Peru with over 2,000 tombs carved into the cliff.

You finish in Pisac town with free time in the largest artisan market in the region, perfect for alpaca textiles, silver jewelry, and wood-fired empanadas before driving back to Cusco by 5pm.

Our Approach

Engineered for Acclimatization

Sacsayhuaman Inca Ruins In Cusco - Orage Nation Peru

We designed this tour in Cusco specifically for your first full day at altitude. You start high at Sacsayhuaman (3,700m) with short walks and plenty of stops, then gradually descend to Pisac in the Sacred Valley (2,970m) where the air is richer. You get the big ruins without the big climbs, and you’re back in Cusco for dinner.

Most agencies rush this as a “city tour” and skip Pisac. We don’t. You get all four Cusco hill sites plus the best Sacred Valley ruins and market in one efficient loop — no backtracking, no wasted time in souvenir shops.

Dedicated to You, Hotel to Hotel

Book direct and we handle everything. 8:00 am pick-up from your Cusco hotel, private van all day, professional guide, and all entrance tickets (BTG Partial Ticket covers Sacsayhuaman, Q’enqo, Puka Pukara, Tambomachay, and Pisac). You walk only 3-4 km total on gentle paths. Our guides are Cusco locals, fluent in English, with degrees in archaeology or tourism. Groups capped at 8, average 5.

Our People

Orange Nation is family-owned in Cusco. Our founder started as a porter, so we pay fair wages above local average and provide full health care. We hire guides from the communities you visit, many of our Pisac guides grew up farming those terraces. Your ticket fees directly support site preservation.

Things To Know Before You Go

  • Altitude is the challenge, not distance
Sacsayhuaman is at 3,700m, higher than Cusco. Take it slow the first hour, drink water, and skip alcohol the night before. We descend to Pisac (2,970m) by lunch where breathing is easier.
  • Fitness: easy walking
This is not a trek. Expect 20-30 minute walks at each site on uneven Inca stone with some steps. Wear shoes with good grip, not sandals. Walking poles not needed.
  • Weather changes fast
Cusco mornings can be 5°C and sunny, afternoons 20°C with rain. The Sacred Valley is warmer and drier. Bring layers, sun hat, rain jacket, and sunscreen every day.
  • Market is real, not touristy
Pisac market is busiest on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays when villagers come down from the mountains. Other days it’s smaller but still authentic. Bring small soles cash for purchases, most stalls don’t take cards.
  • Small group means small group
We cap at 8 travelers. You get a dedicated guide all day, not a rotating trainee. No forced shopping stops.

The guys were very efficient throughout the trip and attentive when we arrived at the campsite. The kitchen service was super delicious , the food quality and healthy, dishes suitable for people (vegans) and a buffet that has nothing to envy others.
Their kindness and efficiency are greatly appreciated for this journey to the Inca Way.

We had a great experience doing the 4d3n Inca Trail. Our porters were so hard working and made sure our tents and equipment were always ready for us. The chef Mario was outstanding and prepared restaurant quality vegetarian food everyday. Our guide Carlos made the trip exceptional, always making sure we were informed and making sure we were all enjoying the trail. He went above and beyond to encourage me when I was unwell. He made the trip the best ever. A beautiful and wonderful trek.

Hiking the Short Inca Trail was hands-down one of the highlights of my entire trip to Peru. This trek is the perfect option if you want a taste of the iconic Inca Trail without committing to the full 4-day hike.

From the moment we started the hike at KM 104 Carlos our guide was amazing and patient. we were surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, lush cloud forests, and fascinating Inca ruins. The trail itself is moderately challenging—expect a steady incline, stone steps, and a bit of cardio—but it’s absolutely doable for anyone with a decent fitness level. The sense of accomplishment when you reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu is
