Machu Picchu is the only Inca citadel you can still walk into through the Sun Gate. This 2-day expedition is the fastest way to do it without camping. You follow the final 12km of original Inca pavement from KM 104, climb through cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna, and reach Inti Punku for an afternoon first view. You sleep one night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, then return the next morning for the Royal Sector. With both Circuit 1 and Circuit 3 included for 2026, you get the classic panoramic photo and the lower temples in one trip. No high passes, no tents, just stone steps and the historic arrival. For active travelers with limited time who want the Sun Gate experience.

  • Hiking Time ∼6 to 7 hours.
  • Altitude 2,000 m – 2,720 m (Inti Punku 2,720 m / 8,924 ft).
  • Distance 12 km approximately.
  • Difficulty Moderate.
  • Meals Box Lunch & Dinner.
  • Accommodation 3★ Hotel in Aguas Calientes.

Your guide picks you up at 4:00 am in Cusco (5:30 am in the Sacred Valley) for the private transfer to Ollantaytambo. You board the 6:10 am train to KM 104, following the Urubamba River as the valley narrows into cloud forest. Bring a packed breakfast for the train.

At KM 104 (2,000m) you cross the footbridge, clear the checkpoint, and start on original Inca pavement at Chachabamba. The first 90 minutes climb steadily through humid forest with river views. The trail then steepens toward a waterfall crossing before you reach Wiñay Wayna (2,650m) by late morning. Your guide walks you through the upper houses, ceremonial fountains, and agricultural terraces built into the mountainside. Lunch is served at the rest area nearby.

After lunch the trail contours along the ridge toward Inti Punku. The final section includes the steep stone steps known as the Gringo Killer stairs. You arrive at the Sun Gate (2,720m) in the mid-afternoon, after the main morning crowds have left the citadel. From here you get your first view of Machu Picchu below. The descent takes 45 minutes to the upper sector, where you enter for Circuit 1. This is the panoramic route to the Guardhouse viewpoint for the classic photo with Huayna Picchu behind.

After your time on the upper terraces, exit the sanctuary and take the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes. Check into your hotel, then meet for dinner and a short briefing for Day 2.

Circuits and Safety

The 2-Day Short Inca Trail is a point-to-point cloud forest hike, not a high-altitude camping expedition. We designed it around the final 12km of original Inca pavement, one major archaeological site, and a hotel night that prioritizes recovery over tents.

By starting at KM 104 and timing your arrival at Inti Punku for mid-afternoon, you avoid the morning day-trip crowds inside Machu Picchu. Then by sleeping in Aguas Calientes at 2,040m, you descend nearly 700m from the Sun Gate before your next morning tour. That pacing is why this trek works for active travelers with 1 night in Cusco, you reach 2,720m but never sleep above 2,050m. For 2026, your Machu Picchu ticket includes both Circuit 1 and Circuit 3, completed across two days.

Route Structure

  • Day 1 KM 104 to Machu Picchu via Sun Gate

  • Hotel Recovery

Weather and Terrain

The route moves through two climate zones in one day. Mornings at KM 104 can be 10°C with mist, afternoons in cloud forest are 25°C and humid with rain possible year-round. We check conditions at the 6pm briefing and adjust start times if needed. The advantage of the hotel night is flexibility, you are dry and rested if weather moves in.

We had a great experience doing the 4d3n Inca Trail. Our porters were so hard working and made sure our tents and equipment were always ready for us. The chef Mario was outstanding and prepared restaurant quality vegetarian food everyday. Our guide Carlos made the trip exceptional, always making sure we were informed and making sure we were all enjoying the trail. He went above and beyond to encourage me when I was unwell. He made the trip the best ever. A beautiful and wonderful trek.

Hiking the Short Inca Trail was hands-down one of the highlights of my entire trip to Peru. This trek is the perfect option if you want a taste of the iconic Inca Trail without committing to the full 4-day hike.

From the moment we started the hike at KM 104 Carlos our guide was amazing and patient. we were surrounded by breathtaking mountain views, lush cloud forests, and fascinating Inca ruins. The trail itself is moderately challenging—expect a steady incline, stone steps, and a bit of cardio—but it’s absolutely doable for anyone with a decent fitness level. The sense of accomplishment when you reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu is
